NordVPN is the consumer VPN most people have heard of, and for reasonable cause. It runs a large server fleet across 60+ countries, offers strong modern protocols (NordLynx, based on WireGuard), and has gone through independent no-logs audits that competitors often skip. For travel, public Wi-Fi, and geo-restricted streaming, it does the job without drama.

The apps are polished across platforms. Desktop, mobile, router setup, and browser extensions all work without the quirks you sometimes get from cheaper competitors. Threat Protection adds DNS-level ad and malware filtering, and Meshnet lets you build private tunnels between your own devices. Speeds on nearby servers are fast enough that most users won't notice the VPN is on.

The honest criticisms are worth stating. Month-to-month pricing is high; Nord's value proposition depends on multi-year commitments that lock you in. VPN markets are competitive and some rivals (Mullvad, Proton, IVPN) have cleaner privacy postures or simpler pricing. Nord has also had security incidents in the past (notably a 2018 server breach disclosed later) which they've addressed but which are fair to note. For a mainstream user who wants a reliable, audited VPN with good apps and streaming support, it remains a strong default.
