n8n is what you pick when Zapier stops being enough. Where Zapier hides the plumbing behind a polished wall, n8n gives you a full node-based canvas: conditional branches, merges, loops, function nodes where you can write JavaScript, and the ability to self-host the whole thing on your own infrastructure. For teams with even a little technical capacity, it's dramatically more powerful per dollar.

The AI story is where n8n has pulled ahead in 2025. Native nodes for OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, vector stores like Pinecone and Qdrant, and a visual AI Agent node let you orchestrate multi-step agent workflows without stitching together a dozen cloud services. The tradeoff is operational. Self-hosting means you own the uptime, the updates, and the database. Cloud pricing is competitive with Zapier for simple use cases but gets fiddly at higher tiers because billing is per-execution, not per-zap. The learning curve is steeper too.
