Relay.app sits in an interesting corner of the automation market. Where Zapier and Make optimize for hands-off, fully automated triggers, and n8n targets developer-heavy custom logic, Relay leans into human-in-the-loop. Workflows can include explicit approval steps where a human reviews the output of an AI or a previous step before it proceeds. That design choice makes it well-suited to operations where mistakes are expensive: outbound messaging, content publishing, contract workflows, and customer communications.

The builder is clean and visual. Integrations cover the usual suspects (Gmail, Slack, Notion, HubSpot, Airtable, Google Sheets) plus AI steps powered by major LLMs. You can pipe output from an AI step into a Slack approval, get a thumbs-up or edit, and then let the workflow continue. That is a pattern that most automation tools force you to hack together manually.

The downside is that Relay is newer than the incumbents, so the integration catalog is smaller and the community content pool is thinner. Advanced branching and error handling still have rough edges in edge cases. Pricing is reasonable but the real limits hit on higher-volume automation where you want dozens of workflows. For teams that specifically want to keep humans in the decision loop while still automating the busywork around them, Relay is one of the few tools purpose-built for that, and it shows.
